What You'll Do

• Develop and prepare detailed work instruction packages from manufacturing outlines or drawings
• Coordinate preliminary manufacturing plans, identifying required resources and tooling
• Determine manufacturing feasibility and recommend technical changes to customers and internal teams
• Interface with Project Engineers, Quality Engineers, Weld Engineers, and Design Engineers to ensure technical accuracy and compliance
• Incorporate and finalize work instruction packages, obtaining approvals as required
• Deliver completed work instructions to Production Control and support implementation on the shop floor
• Provide technical support for manufacturing problem resolution, process enhancements, and cost-effective process improvements
• Estimate operation hours and maintain accurate documentation for production planning
• Recommend improvements to workflows, work instructions, and manufacturing methods based on shop load and equipment availability
• Mentor and train less-experienced personnel in proper manufacturing documentation practice

Must-Have Skills and Experience

• High school or trade school diploma required; associate degree or apprenticeship in engineering/manufacturing preferred

Description

The Assistant Port Engineer has a key role in supporting the operational readiness, maintenance, and regulatory compliance of the fleet. This includes managing vessel engineering systems, overseeing repairs, coordinating with regulatory bodies, and supervising marine personnel. The role requires strong technical, organizational, and leadership skills, with the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in a dynamic maritime environment. The Assistant Port Engineer will be relied upon to make critical and timely decisions that impact safety, cost, and operational readiness.

Essential Functions:

Vessel Maintenance & Repair

• Coordinate and perform preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on vessels and shoreside equipment.
• Develop and update vessel maintenance programs in collaboration with the Port Engineer.
• Conduct diagnostic evaluations and recommend service/repair actions.
• Determine methods, timelines, and costs for vessel repairs.
• Supervise engineering work in progress and ensure timely completion.
• Train engineers on vessel systems, regulatory compliance, and company procedures.
• Arrange inspections and audits (internal and external) and ensure remedy of deficiencies identified with these inspections and audits.

Safety & Environmental Compliance

• Conduct safety meetings and inspections aboard vessels.
• Promote safe work practices among employees and vendors.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and proper handling of hazardous materials.
• Lead initiatives aligned with company safety vision and ethical standards.

Budgeting & Financial Oversight

• Assist in preparation and management of annual maintenance and capital budgets.
• Track and manage vessel costs, including dry-docking and emergency repairs.
• Support insurance claim evaluations and liaise with the Risk Manager on casualty-related matters.

Personnel Management

• Participate in hiring, training, dispatching, and performance management of vessel engineers.
• Provide leadership and direction to Engineering staff to achieve company goals.
• Ensure compliance with HR policies, EEO, and Affirmative Action plans.

Regulatory & Technical Compliance

• Maintain proficiency in maritime regulations (ISM, VMP, NPDES, IAPP, CARB, ABS, USCG, EPA).
• Interpret and apply maritime law, labor contracts, and safety standards.
• Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies for inspections and certifications.

Miscellaneous Duties

• Support other regions and divisions with vessel repairs and dry-dockings.
• Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
• Maintain accurate documentation and reporting.

Technical

• Proficient in marine engineering systems, including engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, and fuel systems.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
• Skilled in welding, rigging, and operation of yard equipment (cranes, forklifts, etc.).

Communication & Leadership

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to lead teams, delegate tasks, and manage personnel effectively without direct authority.
• Strong interpersonal skills for working with vendors, regulators, and internal teams.

Must-Have Skills, Experience, and Education:

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field preferred; associate degree with additional experience acceptable.
• Minimum of five years maritime/operations experience; two years supervisory experience required.
• Familiarity with shipyards, tugs, barges, and shore-side management essential.

Description

• Train for 12-14 weeks for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)/National Board training/certification commissions.
• 120 hours of on-the-job training with another Inspector to complete training process.
• Perform new construction, repair, alteration and jurisdiction inspections of boilers and pressure vessels as required by the American Society of Mechanical Engineering Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code) Sections III, and National Board Code including referenced construction codes and standards of our clients.

• High school diploma and equivalent (Military) work experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
• 3-5 years of boiler and/or high-pressure steam & water system maintenance/operation experience
• 4+ years of mechanical experience with Boilers and Pressure Vessels in a power plant-Nuke or conventional MM/BT, or an SRO and/or a Steam PPWO/EOOW 3+ years
• Navy Nuke EM or ET with a minimum of 3yrs qualified SRO experience

Description

• Monitor assigned production line(s) and respond immediately when jams, minor mechanical issues, or quality concerns occur.
• Perform basic troubleshooting such as clearing minor jams, adjusting belts/guides, restarting equipment, or resetting sensors under guidance.
• Assist operators with line adjustments during startup, changeover, and shutdown.
• Escalate issues to Maintenance or Production Leadership when they exceed entry-level capabilities.

• Responsible for setting up, operating and maintaining CNC machines to produce precision castings according to specifications. Quality Inspector

Position Description

Reports To: Quality Department Manager

Roles and Responsibilities

Perform quality control, inspection and other assigned activities and contribute to SSI's efforts to satisfy customer expectations regarding quality and on-time deliveries. These responsibilities will be accomplished by:

• Personally performing 1st Article, 1st Piece, In-Process and Final Inspection activities. Knowledgeable and experienced in working with AS9102 documents and report forms for this purpose.
• Inspecting in-process production parts and communicating with Machine Operators and Production Managers any required adjustments
• Assisting Production Managers to ensure in-process inspections by our Machine Operators are being performed consistently and properly
• Teaching and helping to train Machine Operators in measurement and inspection techniques and methods.
• Approving finished production and releasing these Orders for shipment
• Documenting inspection results by completing AS9102 report forms, customer specific report forms, and/or SSI Inspection report forms
• Helping to ensure new fixtures and special tooling are inspected and that necessary gauges and instruments are available when needed
• Helping to ensure that inspection gauges and instruments are properly controlled, maintained, calibrated and certified on a timely basis.
• Inspecting Certificates of Conformance from material, external suppliers, and other service providers to ensure these items conform to customers and SSI's purchase order requirements and specifications
• Understanding and then helping to ensure all processes and activities within the AS9100 Certified Quality Management System are fully implemented. Having a firm commitment to maintaining the integrity of the QMS.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years' experience in Quality and/or Inspection roles where precision machined parts and components are manufactured
• Demonstrated knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
• Demonstrated skill in reading and understanding complex blueprints
• Demonstrated knowledge of using various measurement instruments to inspect parts and perform bench or layout dimensional inspections
• Must be able to communicate effectively with Machine Operators, Manufacturing and Company management, Customers, and Suppliers
• Must enjoy working within a Team environment to accomplish challenging company goals and objectives
